In this workshop, we will create a donut-shaped ceramic form, exploring both construction and surface design. This piece introduces a continuous circular volume, offering new possibilities for movement, balance, and visual rhythm within your totem.
  • In the first part of the workshop (2.5 hours), you’ll build your donut form using slab construction techniques. Once the structure is complete, we will apply colored slip to the surface, creating a rich base layer for design.

At 11:30 am – We’ll then take a 30-minute lunch break—please bring something to eat. During this time, your piece will rest and begin to firm up to a leather-hard stage.

  • In the second half of the workshop (2 hours), we’ll carve into the surface, removing areas of the colored slip to reveal the clay beneath. This subtractive technique allows you to create contrast, pattern, and personal expression within your form.

This workshop is ideal for those interested in combining form and surface design. With step-by-step guidance, you’ll explore how color and carving interact, leaving with a striking piece that can stand alone or become part of a larger totem.

What’s Included:
Clay (Rocky Mountain - Dover), all materials, color slip, bisque firing, and glaze firing. (Please let me know if you would like me to apply a clear glaze to your piece for the final firing.)

NOTE:  Please let me know if, after your piece has been bisque-fired, you would like to add more color to your piece by using underglazes, oxides, or mason stains. You’re welcome to visit my Explore & Create page to book additional studio time. During that time, you can paint your piece before it goes into the glaze firing.

After the workshop, your pieces will be place in the kiln to be glaze fire (this may take 2 - 3 days). Once ready, you’ll receive an email to pick up your finished Totem at Artist Home Studio.
