In this Half-Moon Edition, we will construct a dynamic form featuring a curved base with an added horizontal element—a third wall on top that partially closes the form. This combination introduces new structural challenges and opens up possibilities for more sculptural expression.
  • In the first part of the workshop (2.5 hours), you’ll learn how to build your form using slab construction and molds to shape the curve. You will also decorate the surface using stamps and rollers to create texture and visual interest. We’ll then focus on creating strong joints and a stable structure as we prepare the piece for the next stage.

At 11:30 am –We’ll then take a 30-minute lunch break—please bring something to eat.
During this time, your piece will rest, allowing the half-moon form to firm up to a softer leather-hard stage, preparing it for the addition of the top wall.

  • In the second half of the workshop (2 hours), we’ll refine the form by adding the horizontal wall, partially closing the shape. Depending on your design, you may carve, alter, or enhance the structure to create movement and personal expression.

This workshop is ideal for those interested in expanding their hand-building skills and exploring more complex forms. With step-by-step guidance and hands-on instruction, you’ll gain confidence in construction techniques while creating a distinctive piece that can stand alone or become part of a larger totem.

What’s Included:
Clay (Rocky Mountain - Dover), all materials, bisque firing, and glaze firing. (Please let me know if you would like me to apply a clear glaze to your piece for the final firing.)

NOTE:  Please let me know if, after your piece has been bisque-fired, you would like to add color using underglazes, oxides, or mason stains. You’re welcome to visit my Explore & Create page to book additional studio time. During that time, you can paint your piece before it goes into the glaze firing.

After the workshop, your pieces will be place in the kiln to be glaze fire (this may take 2 - 3 days). Once ready, you’ll receive an email to pick up your finished Totem at Artist Home Studio.
